Before you buy

Your next warranty is decided at the till — in about ninety seconds.

The most useful sentence in this market came from the employee who described the lookup system: warranties go unclaimed because they were "entered incorrectly or not at all." The claim you'll file in 2029 is being typed right now, by a busy clerk, from what you say out loud. This checklist is how it gets typed right.

At the till — the fields

  1. Your phone number — yours. Not the store's, not a work number you'll lose. It's the primary key at AutoZone and the search seed everywhere.
  2. Your name, spelled. Say it, then check the receipt prints it right. A misspelled name is a missing warranty with extra steps.
  3. Your ZIP — one of the five lookup paths; make sure it's the one you'll still remember (and if you move, both ZIPs belong in your records).
  4. Pay by card when you can. The card number is a lookup path and the statement is the receipt's understudy. Cash leaves no understudy.
  5. Read the printed warranty period on the receipt before you leave — at Advance, that printed period IS the warranty. Wrong period printed = fix it at the till, not at the claim.

The same evening — the envelope

  1. Photograph the receipt (thermal ink fades in about a year; the photo doesn't). Front, and the part's box label with its date code.
  2. One envelope or folder per vehicle: receipt photo printout, box labels, install date and mileage, companion-part receipts (filters, driers, strainers — see the proof traps), and any test printouts from install day.
  3. Register anything registerable and note the battery's install date on the battery itself with a paint pen — future-you, mid-fight, says thanks.

Ninety seconds at the till, five minutes that evening. The claim you never have to fight is the one whose record was right.

Not sure which wall you hit? The free checker sorts it in a few picks — chain, part, purchase date, your proof, and the store's own words — and gives you where you stand under the written policy, the proration math where it applies, the exact next counter move, and the ladder above the store.
