The part pages · Alternators
"Lifetime" on an alternator box is a real warranty with four real bounds: it covers defects (not wear, not damage from a dying battery or a bad belt), it lives in a record that has to be found, it can be reclassified (commercial use), and its claims are graded by a 90-second bench test. Here is the term sheet, chain by chain.
Defect coverage. All four chains warrant against defects in materials and workmanship — a regulator that dies at 14 months, bearings that seize early, a diode trio that drops a phase. Exclusions (O'Reilly's §1.4 is the published template): improper installation, accident or collision damage, off-road or racing use, parts altered or used as part of another product's repair, and misuse — a failed battery left to cook the alternator is the classic "cause" argument; keep your battery test records. Ownership. O'Reilly's lifetime lasts while you own the vehicle it was first installed on. Era. The terms from your sale date control — the checker counts your purchase date for exactly this reason.
Most alternator claims die at the tester, not the text. The dispute play — printout, failure conditions in writing, independent retest, escalation file — is laid out on the bench-test page. AutoZone adds one alternator-specific door: the published Starting & Charging roadside-assistance line, 1-866-679-2374, for covered parts that strand you.
Found record + defect pattern + a test dispute handled = the strong claim. Missing record = the lookup fight first (AutoZone, all chains). The checker grades your exact combination free.
Two sister sites live on the calculation side of this same garage. RaceCombo runs the racing and tuning calculators — gearing, tire size, bracket math. RegearReady works out regear decisions for Jeeps and trucks — which ratio, what it does to RPM and the speedometer. Free tools, same house.
Not sure which wall you hit? The free checker sorts it in a few picks — chain, part, purchase date, your proof, and the store's own words — and gives you where you stand under the written policy, the proration math where it applies, the exact next counter move, and the ladder above the store. The pages above are the map. The kit is the paperwork: the word-for-word counter scripts, the per-chain playbooks, the worksheets, and the complaint templates.
